Sugaring vs Waxing: Which Is A Better Hair Removal Method?

When booking a hair removal appointment, you’ve probably wondered about the difference between sugaring and waxing on the treatment menu. Both methods promise smooth, hair-free skin, but the way they work is actually different. And for some skin types, that difference matters.

At Zenyu Skin & Beauty, one of the trusted destinations for natural hair removal in Mornington Peninsula, we offer both. And rather than pushing one over the other, we think it’s worth helping you understand how each method works so you can make an informed choice for your skin.

What Is Waxing and How Does It Work?

Waxing has been around for a long time, and there’s a reason it remains such a popular choice. It’s effective and reliable, and the most skilled therapists can cover a large area quickly.

There are two main types of wax used in professional salons:

  • Strip wax (also called soft wax) – applied in a thin layer and removed using a cloth or paper strip.
  • Hard wax – applied more thickly, allowed to set, and then removed directly without a strip. It’s typically gentler and better suited to sensitive areas.

Both types work the same way at the root level. Warm wax is applied to the skin, it bonds to the hairs (and to the skin itself), and then it’s pulled away against the direction of hair growth. That opposite-direction pull is what gives waxing its strong grip. It’s effective on coarser or thicker hair because of the force it can generate.

At Zenyu, we use a high-quality, vegan-friendly hot wax for our waxing services, which are available for:

  • brows
  • lip
  • chin
  • sides of the face

For most body areas, we generally recommend sugaring.

What Is Sugaring and How Does It Work?

Sugaring is one of the oldest hair removal methods in the world, with roots tracing all the way back to ancient Egypt. Legend has it that Cleopatra herself was a fan, and honestly, we can see why.

The paste itself couldn’t be simpler: pure sugar, water, and lemon. That’s genuinely all that’s in it.

The technique is where sugaring really sets itself apart. Unlike waxing, the paste is applied against the direction of hair growth, allowing it to seep into the follicle and get a thorough grip on the hair. It’s then removed with a flicking motion in the same direction as hair growth. This is the opposite of waxing, and it’s a significant distinction. Removing hair in its natural direction of growth reduces breakage, lessens discomfort, and minimises the disruption to the surrounding skin.

Because the paste only adheres to hair and dead skin cells (not live skin cells), it also provides a gentle exfoliating effect without pulling or damaging the skin underneath.

At Zenyu, sugaring is our primary hair removal method for body areas, from underarms and legs to Brazilian and bikini treatments.

Comparing the Benefits Between Sugaring and Waxing

Ingredients and Skin Safety

  • Sugaring: Contains nothing synthetic like resins, preservatives, or fragrances. It’s hypoallergenic, biodegradable, and as natural as a hair removal product gets. Crucially, it only adheres to hair and dead skin cells, so it won’t lift or irritate the surface of your skin.
  • Waxing: Waxing formulas vary between brands and salons. Some contain added fragrances or conditioning agents, which can be problematic for reactive skin. At Zenyu, we use a carefully selected vegan wax, so you’re not dealing with anything unnecessarily harsh, but it’s a more complex formulation than the three-ingredient sugar paste. Because wax does adhere to live skin cells, it can occasionally lift or sensitise the skin, particularly in areas that have been recently treated.
  • Which is better? For anyone with sensitive skin or a preference for clean, natural products, sugaring is the clearer choice. For clients with resilient skin who aren’t prone to reactions, either method is suitable.

Pain Levels

  • Sugaring: Most clients find sugaring the more comfortable option. The paste is only warmed to around body temperature, so there’s no risk of heat-related discomfort or burning. Because it only adheres to hair and dead skin cells (rather than live skin), it has less to pull against when removed, which makes a noticeable difference, particularly in sensitive areas.
  • Waxing: Waxing applies heat and bonds directly to the skin. Removal against the direction of hair growth creates a stronger pull, which can feel more intense, especially around the bikini line or face.
  • Which is better? Sugaring generally wins on comfort, but pain tolerance is very individual. We’d be fibbing if we said either method was completely painless. First-time clients sometimes find both more uncomfortable than expected, and that tends to ease significantly with regular appointments as hair becomes finer over time.

Effectiveness on Different Hair Types

  • Sugaring: Sugaring excels with finer hair and shorter lengths. The paste can grip hair as short as 1.5–2mm (in the early anagen, or growth, phase), which is shorter than most waxes can effectively handle. Great for clients who don’t want to wait until hair is noticeably long before coming in. A 2022 study also found that repeated sugaring sessions produced better hair thickness reduction over time, meaning hair may grow back finer and sparser with consistent treatment.
  • Waxing: For coarser or thicker hair, waxing tends to have a stronger grip. The opposite-direction removal creates more pull force, making it well-suited to denser hair growth. Some clients with very coarse hair find that sugaring alone isn’t quite enough to remove everything cleanly in one pass. Interestingly, the study also found that hard wax produced fewer ingrown hairs in the short term.
  • Which is better? It depends on your hair type. Sugaring is better for fine to medium hair and shorter lengths; waxing has the edge on coarser, thicker hair. It’s a nuanced call, which is exactly why we always assess each client individually rather than making assumptions.

How Long Results Last

  • Sugaring: Both methods remove hair from the root, so baseline regrowth timelines are similar, which is around four to six weeks. Where sugaring stands out is with consistent, closely timed appointments. At Zenyu, our sugaring body programs are scheduled every two to three weeks during the hair reduction phase, targeting hair in the early anagen (growth) stage when the follicle is most vulnerable. Over time, hair grows back finer, slower, and less densely, to the point where some clients experience permanent hair reduction with ongoing treatment.
  • Waxing: Waxing can achieve similar long-term results with consistency, but the longer minimum hair length required between appointments makes it harder to maintain the tight scheduling that accelerates hair reduction.
  • Which is better? For long-term reduction, sugaring has the edge. For one-off or occasional appointments, both methods deliver comparable smoothness.

Skin Exfoliation Benefits

  • Sugaring: Because the paste only bonds to dead skin cells (not live ones), sugaring exfoliates more selectively. You get the smoothing benefit without the risk of lifting or irritating the skin underneath.
  • Waxing: Waxing also removes dead skin cells along with the hair, leaving skin feeling smooth immediately after treatment. That exfoliation is fairly thorough, though sometimes a little too thorough if skin is already sensitised or the therapist isn’t careful with technique, as wax grips everything in its path, including the surface layer of live skin cells.
  • Which is better? Both methods exfoliate effectively, but sugaring does so with more precision. For clients with sensitive or recently treated skin, sugaring’s selective adherence makes it the safer and more comfortable option.

Best Method for Your Skin Type

  • Sugaring is generally the better fit for sensitive or reactive skin, conditions like eczema or psoriasis, varicose or spider veins, finer hair, or anyone with a history of irritation from traditional waxing.
  • Waxing tends to suit those with coarser or thicker hair and skin that handles conventional treatments without issue.
  • Which is better? It depends entirely on your skin, which is why at Zenyu, we assess every client before recommending a method rather than leaving it to guesswork.

Speed and Efficiency

  • Sugaring: No setting time is required. The paste is applied and removed in one continuous motion, so individual passes are quick. On coarser hair, additional passes may be needed to capture everything cleanly, which can add a little time to the appointment.
  • Waxing: For large areas like legs, back, or arms, waxing is generally the faster option. The wax can be applied and removed in broad sections, covering more ground per pass.
  • Which is better? For large body areas, waxing has the speed advantage. For smaller, more detailed areas like the face or bikini line, the difference is minimal, and in those areas, the gentleness of the method matters far more than the time it takes.

Cost and Accessibility at Zenyu

  • Sugaring: Our sugaring services cover the full range of body areas, from a snail trail through to a full Brazilian. We also offer sugaring for underarms, half and full arms, half and full legs, bikini, extended bikini, G-string, and face areas.
  • Waxing: Available for select facial areas: brows, lip/chin, and sides of face. We also offer threading for brows and facial hair, which is completely chemical-free and ideal for clients on certain medications (more on that shortly).
  • Which is better? For body treatments, sugaring is our primary method and covers every area. For facial hair, you have the choice of waxing, sugaring, or threading, depending on your skin and preferences. And if you’re after long-term reduction with minimal upkeep, IPL Super Hair Removal is also available for most body and face areas.

Hygiene and Cleanup

  • Sugaring: Each appointment at Zenyu begins with a single ball of paste prepared specifically for you. That ball is used for your entire session. No going back to a shared pot, no double-dipping. This eliminates cross-contamination. Sugar paste also has an extremely high sugar content, which creates an environment where bacteria simply can’t survive. Cleanup is equally easy: the paste is water-soluble, so any residue dissolves with water, leaving no sticky film on the skin.
  • Waxing: Single-use applicators should always be standard practice in a professional salon. Wax residue, however, requires oil or a specific solvent to remove, and can leave skin feeling tacky if not cleaned thoroughly after treatment.
  • Which is better? Sugaring has the clear advantage here, from the single-use paste ball through to effortless water cleanup. It’s a more hygienic process by design.

Potential Side Effects

  • Sugaring: Temporary redness and mild sensitivity immediately after treatment are completely normal and typically settle within a few hours. Some clients experience folliculitis (small, inflamed spots at the hair follicle), particularly in areas prone to friction or heat.
  • Waxing: Similar temporary redness and sensitivity can occur after waxing.
  • Which is better? Both carry a similar baseline risk of temporary irritation. The research suggests hard wax may produce fewer ingrowns in the short term, while sugaring offers better long-term hair reduction. The most effective way to minimise side effects from either method is consistent appointments, proper preparation, and following your therapist’s aftercare advice.

Sugaring vs. Waxing for Brazilian, Bikini, G-String, and Body Areas

Here’s how Zenyu approaches the different treatment areas:

  • Brazilian: Sugaring is our recommended method. The all-natural formula, gentler removal direction, and ability to grip shorter hair makes it a far kinder option for such a sensitive area.
  • Bikini and Extended Bikini: Sugaring is our preferred method here, too. It handles the curves and contours of the bikini area well without the level of irritation that wax can sometimes cause.
  • G-String: A great middle ground between a standard bikini and a full Brazilian, and again best suited to sugaring for the same reasons.
  • Underarms: The underarm area is prone to irritation, so the gentler adherence of sugar paste makes it the smarter choice here.
  • Legs and Arms: Sugaring covers both areas effectively. For clients after a longer-term reduction with less upkeep, IPL Super Hair Removal is also available.
  • Face: For brows, lip, chin, and sides of face, we offer threading, sugaring, and waxing. Threading is chemical-free and extremely precise, making it our go-to for brow shaping. Sugaring and waxing are both available, depending on the area and your skin’s needs.

Who Should Think Carefully Before Getting Sugaring or Waxing?

Both methods are suitable for most people, but there are some situations where we’d want to have a conversation with you before proceeding or where an alternative method is a better fit entirely.

  • Clients on Roaccutane (isotretinoin): This is a firm no for both sugaring and waxing. Roaccutane thins the skin significantly, making it highly susceptible to tearing, lifting, and damage during hair removal. Threading is the only safe hair removal option for clients currently taking or recently finishing a course of Roaccutane.
  • Recent retinoid or exfoliating treatments: If you’ve used retinol products, prescription retinoids, or had a chemical peel recently, your skin barrier is more vulnerable than usual. We’d advise waiting until the skin has fully recovered before booking a waxing or sugaring appointment.
  • Active skin conditions in the treatment area: If you have an active flare of eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, or any open wounds or irritated skin in the area, it’s best to reschedule until things have settled.
  • Varicose or spider veins: Sugaring is safe for varicose and spider veins. Waxing is generally not recommended over these areas due to the heat and pulling pressure involved.
  • Sunburned skin: Never wax or sugar over sunburned skin. Wait until the skin has fully healed first.

If you’re unsure whether a treatment is right for you, just ask. We’d always rather have that conversation up front than have you uncomfortable during or after your appointment.

How to Prepare and Care for Your Skin Before and After

Getting the best results from sugaring or waxing isn’t just about what happens in the treatment room. Your prep and aftercare matter just as much.

Before Your Appointment

  • Let your hair grow to the right length. For waxing, hair generally needs to be at least 5–6mm. For sugaring, we can work with hair as short as 1.5–2mm, particularly during a sugaring body program when you’re coming in every two to three weeks.
  • Exfoliate 24–48 hours before. A gentle exfoliation helps lift dead skin cells and any trapped hairs, allowing for a smoother, more effective treatment. Don’t exfoliate on the day of your appointment, as this can sensitise the skin.
  • Avoid retinoids for at least 48–72 hours beforehand. If you’re using retinol or prescription vitamin A products, pause them a few days before your appointment.
  • Come in clean and dry. Avoid oils, lotions, and heavy moisturisers on the day of your appointment, as these can create a barrier that affects adhesion.
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing. Especially for body and bikini treatments, tight clothing can irritate freshly treated skin.

After Your Appointment

  • Avoid heat for 24 hours. This means no hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, or intense exercise. Your follicles are open, and your skin is more vulnerable immediately after treatment.
  • Skip tight clothing for the rest of the day, particularly after bikini and leg treatments.
  • Don’t touch the treated area unnecessarily. Bacteria from your hands can enter open follicles and cause irritation or breakouts.
  • Moisturise regularly from the following day onward. Well-hydrated skin is more comfortable between appointments and helps prevent ingrown hairs.
  • Exfoliate gently from around 48–72 hours after treatment, and then continue every few days. This is one of the most important steps for preventing ingrown hairs, particularly in areas prone to them.

So, Is Sugaring Better Than Waxing?

It all depends on your skin, your hair type, and what you’re trying to achieve, and anyone who tells you otherwise is probably oversimplifying.

What matters most isn’t which method wins in a general sense, it’s which method is right for you. That’s why at Zenyu, we never just assume. We assess every client, look at your skin, understand your history, and make a recommendation based on what we actually see, not what’s most convenient or what everyone else is doing.

If you’re ready to find the right hair removal approach for your skin, we’d love to help.
